Grant Allison
Bass, Guitar & Subject Music
Grant is a musician from Port Elizabeth, South Africa. He started playing guitar at the age of 9 and moved onto bass in 2009, through a youth development program called ‘the New Afroteens’, where he had the opportunity of working alongside the Late Great Hugh Masekela.
This coincided with his High School formal music studies under Marlon Louis at Victoria Park High School, where Shane Cooper, Romy Brateseth, Kyle Du Preez and Phumlani Mtiti all attended.
Grant furthered his music studies at the Nelson Mandela University, where he completed a BMus under the direction of John Edwards, who was a piano student of Darius Brubeck. He then completed his PGCE in Creative Arts at the GET phase and Subject Music at FET level.
He has been a professional musician for 12 years and played countless shows and musicals, working in orchestras, jazz combos, and big bands. In 2019, he played a pop show for six nights a week in Shenyang Liaoning, China filling the roles of bass player and musical Director. He has worked with notable Contemporary figures such as Nomfundo Xaluva, Thandi Ntuli, Titi Luzipo, Zoe Modiga, Spa Mdlalose, Judith Sephuma, Phumlani Mtiti, Asanda Mqiki, Lloyd Martin and many more.
Grant’s ethos to education is to encourage his students to explore their innate passion for music, by nurturing their natural ability to insure their utmost potential. He teaches bass guitar, electric guitar and subject music at the centre.
